Reduce, Reuse, Repair

I came across this post on Bits and Bobbins. And I love a good manifesto. Especially when the manifesto is something I agree with and have for my whole life. Too many times I’ve been told to just buy something new instead of repairing what I just have and I feel like of late I’ve begun to give in to that feeling. But this post reminds me that I’m all about repairing things instead of constantly replacing them. I’m the one who bought a used laptop and used it for 7 more years even though it wouldn’t let me view video, run any current programs, and was running out of memory. But it worked for my needs which were minor. And then it stopped working. And now it is sitting unloved, but undiscarded, in my office.

I bought several pair of socks this past fall at Target. I’ve worn through the toes of almost every pair. But only in the same spot. (Oddly enough, the socks I purchased last year from Target are still just fine.) And I’m tempted to pull out the darning egg and give it a whirl. I wasn’t good at it in 5th grade when I was trying for a patch from the Girl Scouts. But I’ve got a little more patience now than I had before. I like the idea of repairing things instead of throwing them away. It makes sense to me. It always has. And I vow to remember that.

And it was so nice of Craft to publish an article about darning just in time for me to find it.
